About Calistoga

Located at the "top" of Napa County, Calistoga is convenient to all the major wine destination of not only Napa Valley, but also Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties. Most of the United States' most famous AVA's are no more than an hour's drive from Meadowlark Country House. If you're on your cell phone or tablet you can get directions by clicking here (notice our 4.9 out of 5.0 five star rating on google business!)

Calistoga is due south of the Clearlake Volcanic Field and has a quiescent magma source about six miles below the surface. The heat from below makes possible the numerous natural warm water springs in the area that gave rise to the spa town of Calistoga. The town was founded by California's first millionaire, Sam Brannan, who wanted to promote a warm place for his rich friends in San Francisco to escape the cold fog of the Summers there. He proclaimed that this place would be the "Calistoga of Sarafornia", referencing the still famous spa town of Saratoga Springs in Upstate New York.

Calistoga was also a major stage stop for the stage coaches and wagons coming over from the silver, gold and mercury mines on Mt. St. Helena and around Clear Lake. A trip up the Old Lawley Toll Road follows the route that they took (not for the faint of heart, single-lane in some places with quite precipitous drop-offs).

At one time, the top of nearby Mt. St. Helena was a pick for the site of the Lick Observatory, which was finally situated on Mt. Hamilton outside of San Jose. It's about a forty minute drive to Robert Louis Stevenson Park at the top of the mountain from Meadowlark Country House and Resort. On a clear day you can see Mt. Diablo and parts of San Francisco bay.
